Speisekino Moabit 2016 #9

Shared experiences of some micro-histories

An evening presented by Madeleine Bernstorff.
In the frame of the exhibition “Politics of Sharing. On Collective Wisdom”

The film program combines two levels of shared experiences:

On the one hand the re-enactments of rituals from the Mediterranean region and their communal sociality, filmed in an immersive-musical manner in the South of Italy by film makers Cecilia Mangini and Lino del Fra in the late 1950s.

On the other hand two new films by Kush Badhwar and Filipa César, which in idiosyncratic ways attempt to share and convey the political actions against disenfranchisement in anti-(neo-)colonial contexts. Including a short digression into the political cultural anthropology of Ernesto de Martino, collaborator of Cecilia Mangini and many other Italian film makers, who consistently read rituals as a strategy of empowerment.

Details about the Films:

LA PASSIONE DEL GRANO / The Passion of the corn
D: Lino del Fra, Italy 1960, OV, 11’, digital file
In Lucania, people still today celebrate the “Passion of the corn” during the grain harvest season – an agrarian ritual from the ancient religions of the Mediterranean region, which was widespread across peasant Europe in a past that is still present. “Look! you assure the corn, we don’t mow you!”

BLOOD EARTH
D: Kush Badhwar
Oriya, Hindi, English, Kui, India 2013, with English subtitles, 40’, digital file
In the bauxite-rich region around the village of Kucheipadar in the Indian state Odisha, the local population resisted against the exploitation of natural resources. The film BLOOD EARTH examines chants, agriculture, village life and political meetings, improvising a connection of voice, music, sound and noise.

TRANSMISSION FROM THE LIBERATED ZONES
D: Filipa César
with Gi Dias, Lennart Malmer, Birgitta Dahl, Ingela Romare, Folke Löfgren
Portugal / France / Germany / Sweden 2015, with English subtitles, 30’, digital file
During the anticolonial struggles for liberation (1963–74) in Guinea-Bissau a number of Swedish activists shared the experiences of freedom fighters in solidarity, which they relate to the film director, while a teenager translates this into other, very contemporary struggles.

STENDALI
D: Cecilia Mangini, music: Egisto Macchi, Italy 1959, with English subtitles, 11’, digital file
A traditional mourning ritual among peasant women in the Greek-Calabrian mountain village Martano, with a poetic-realistic voice-over commentary by P. P. Pasolini: a farewell song in haunting trance.

Thanks to Paolo Pisanelli, Fabian Tietke, Cecilia Valenti, and Michaela Schäuble.

The exhibition is still running until July 10th in the ifa-Galerie Berlin and has been curated by Elke aus dem Moore (Head of the Arts Department of ifa) ans Misal Adnan Yıldız (Director of Artspace New Zeeland, Auckland).
