DIAMOND HUNT - Vebjørg Hagene Thoe

Vebjørg Hagene Thoe ( Norway )

The title refers to the classic board game from Finland, popular all over Europe, where the participants travel through Africa to find diamonds and other gem stones, and the goal is to get out of the continent as soon as "The African star" is found. During the journey there are perils and dangers of the jungle, and even robbers occur.

Hagene Thoe is making an inter-activ installation with tapestries and objects, including also sound and photo, where she offers the public to explore the current Africa. The gems and robbers of today are of another category than in the game- like oil companies or charities- but the exploitation and colonization continues. The contents of the installation is being developed this fall, with the ZKU stay as an important part of the project. She is still researching, trying to get new knowledge about European colonial history, including the role of missionaries. There will be a teaser of the installation at the Openhaus.
