Culture and sport are often celebrated as a means of developing urban spaces, while they are also no less intensively critiqued for intensifying social inequality. At the same time, for many social activists culture and sport events constitute a key tool in seeking to bring about social change.
Whether on a mega- or micro-scale events are founded on a particular complex mode of organization, collaboration, investment, return, planning, unpredictability and different perspectives on success and failure. The aim of the podium is to explore the paradigm of organizing sport events and to try to understand the potential and difficulties raised by the rising importance of events.

Thomas Fatheuer lebte und arbeitete von 1992 bis 2010 in Brasilien. Seit seine 1985 veröffentlichen Examensarbeit "Eigentore - Soziologie und Fussball" schreibt er über das Thema, mit Blick auf den brasilianischen Fußball. In Deutschland ist Werder Bremen sein Mannschaft, in Brasilien Flamengo.
Martin Ling, Journalist und Ökonom, ist Barcelona und Argentinien-Fan, lebt in Berlin und arbeitet als Auslandsredakteur bei der Tageszeitung neues deutschland sowie bei der Monatszeitschrift Lateinamerika Nachrichten
